  Overview of the Conference

Topology and Analysis in Applications, Durban 2004, will be the first conference of this nature in KwaZulu-Natal. It is organized in cooperation with the 19th "Summer" Conference on Topology and its Applications, 5-9 July, 2004, University of Cape Town, South Africa, which is a part of a well established conference series in Topology of the American Mathematical Society. We cordially invite all participants in the Cape Town conference to visit the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal, and to take part in our regional meeting.

The conference will take place in Didima Conference Centre, in the Cathedral Peak Valley in the heart of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park - a World Heritage Site surrounded by living tapestry of old and new images of Africa.

Didima camp takes its name from the great Didima Gorge which incises a spectacular path through the peaks and valleys of the Drakensberg mountains. These mountains, which rise to altitude exceeding 3000 meters, are astonishing. All around the area are numerous rock shelters filled with typically expressive San polychrome paintings, that reveal the history and culture of the San people.

If you listen carefully, you will hear the sounds of the San echoing on the winds that carry through Cathedral Peak Valley. And if you take the time to reflect, you will touch their simple and beautiful lives.

Cathedral Peak is a stunning mountain paradise bathed in scenic beauty with rivers, streams and waterfalls, grasslands, caves, San rock art and craggy cliffs. Didima camp has been themed around the art of the San people who lived in these mountains for thousands of years. Its chalets are styled uniquely in a symbolic expression of the transient dwellings of the San people. Its state-of-the-art conference venue has all the latest conference communications technologies and facilites, with a breathtaking view of the scenic splendour of Cathedral Peak through an impressive all-glass wall.
